One Hundred Years from Now
Author Unknown

One hundred years from now
It will not matter
what kind of car I drove,
What kind of house I lived in,
how much money was in my bank account
nor what my clothes looked like.
But the world may be a better place because
I was important in the life of a child.

Introduction. . .

As negative publicity about America’s high schools and our students swirls around the nation, many of us have decided to be proactive rather than complain about our school administrators and criticize our children. We believe it takes an involved and caring community to redirect the attention of our young people to activities and goals that are wholesome and worthwhile. Like many people in this nation, we believe that High School Athletic programs have done much to foster discipline, teamwork and community pride among our young people. Our goal is to promote athletics and to reward our youth for excellence and positive performance.  One way we can do this is by pouring our energy into endowing a scholarship for the winner of the Mizeman Trophy.

The History. . .

As many of you know, the Mizeman Trophy started tongue in cheek between friends, but has evolved into a prized award for the undersized athlete. We have had seven winners; Randal Martin of Rogers High School, D.J. Minor of Bradshaw High School, Nathaniel Knight of Phillips High School, Zach Woodford of Brooks High School, Daniel Luffman of Lexington High School, Dewayne Gunn of Deshler High School, and Kiah Brown of Haleyville High School. All have gone on to further their education and four of the seven have continued on to college athletics. All winners have gone to different colleges and universities, representing our area at West Point Military Academy, Brown University, Alabama State University, the University of North Alabama, Northwest Shoals Community College, and Columbia College.

We believe this scholarship and the recognition it brings to these  dedicated young men will help to create heroes and role models for our junior high and elementary children; the kind of heroes we need in America today.  Through this award, we wish to accomplish two primary things:

  1. To further the nominated athlete's status and legend in each school by holding them up to the light of positive recognition for other children to follow.

  2. To raise up a higher standard for our elementary and junior high children to reach for.

The Process for Choosing a Winner. . .

To better illustrate the qualifications of the award and the process we go through, the following is the actual wording that goes to each player nominated for the award:

This trophy goes to an impact player - a player who makes a difference in his team’s opportunities to win. The Mizeman nominee must meet certain physical requirements. He must stand under six feet tall and weigh less than 175 pounds. The Northwest Alabama counties eligible for nominations include Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Marion, Morgan, Winston and Lawrence counties. Over 30 schools are represented.

This athlete is nominated by his head football coach for consideration. The nominee’s demonstrated qualities include determination, work ethic, character, athletic ability and leadership. The nominee’s names and individual statistics are sent to broadcasters and sports writers in Northwest Alabama for their vote.

Your head coach has esteemed you by nominating you for this award. To be selected as a finalist by sports writers and broadcasters is an achievement. To be selected as the best player in Northwest Alabama, based on the above criteria, is truly an honor.

An Opportunity to Participate in the Campaign. . .

Now in our seventh year, we are looking to endow a scholarship that will provide these dedicated young student athletes with the recognition and reward they deserve. We are confident in the generosity of our community or we would not have undertaken this effort. If you believe in positively reinforcing the good behavior of our youth and in helping us to create heroes for our children, please help us by giving a gift to The Mizeman Trophy Scholarship Fund.  In order to achieve our initial goal of $65,000, a series of donor levels and recognitions have been established as follows:
